Improved Mosquito, Rodent and Disease Control in Riverside
• The Northwest Mosquito and Vector Control District has provided comprehensive mosquito, rodent and disease control services in the western portion of the City of Riverside and surrounding areas for over 50 years. The problem is that over 75% of the City of Riverside is outside of the District’s service area, and currently only receives minimal mosquito control services.
• The City and Mosquito Control District leaders have been working to address this issue, and recommend proactive mosquito, rodent and disease monitoring and control services for the areas in the City that currently only receive minimal services.
• The increase in West Nile Virus illnesses last year in this area is evidence that improved regional mosquito and disease control services are needed.
• In March 2013, ballots will be mailed to allow property owners to decide if these improved public health services should be provided to the unprotected areas of the City of Riverside.
Comprehensive Year Round Services
• Improve the control of mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.
• Begin controlling rats, rodents and other disease carrying vectors in the City.
• Year round testing and early detection of emerging diseases, such as West Nile virus, Dengue and yellow fever, Canine heartworm, Lyme disease, Encephalitis, Hantavirus or Plague.
• Comprehensive response to any disease outbreaks from mosquitoes, rodents, ticks and fleas.
• Prevent future outbreaks of West Nile virus and other diseases.
• Control mosquitoes and other disease carrying vectors using environmentally safe approaches that focus on eliminating the breeding sources and locations.
